IELTS Listening 6.0 → 7.0: How to Balance Mocks and Intensive Work
~8 min read · 2-week experiment unit · Updated 2026-07-24 · Operator-written
Moving from roughly band 6.0 to 7.0 is rarely “find 20 more papers.” It is matching weekly mock volume vs intensive blocks to your raw-score plateau. This page gives checkable ratios wired to our 64-set bank and CD simulator. No score promise—only a plan you can audit in two weeks.
Score bands are approximate public anchors (forms vary slightly). We use them for planning, not as official guarantees. See scoring.
Roughly 23–25 ≈ 6.0, 26–29 ≈ 6.5, 30–31 ≈ 7.0—use the mean of your last three timed sets, not one lucky day.

Place yourself (35 minutes today)
- One full timed set on 64 sets (or strict section timing to 40 items);
- Mark the raw score;
- Tag misses with K/R/F/S/A;
- Enter the table with a 3-set mean (if you only have one, take a second set first).
Core weekly ratios
| Mean correct /40 | Aim | Timed mocks / week | Intensive blocks / week | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 23–25 (~6.0) | Stabilise 26+ | 2 (sections OK) | 4–5 × 20-min SOP | S + basic R; F discipline |
| 26–29 (~6.5 plateau) | Stable 30 | 3 | 3 on worst section | Weekly champion code (often R/K) |
| 30–31 (on 7.0) | Hold ≥30, push 32 | 3–4 (incl. 1 CD full) | 2: lucky-correct + new misses only | F → 0; K turns; less junk intensive |
| ≥32 | Maintain / 7.5 | 2–3 | 1–2 | Hard types + computer UI; free time for other skills |
Operator rule: intensive sessions may outnumber mocks; mocks should not double while labels are mushy. If you oscillate 26–29 for 3+ weeks, cut mocks to 2 and fix intensive quality before “downloading more sets.”
Band detail
A. 23–25 — acoustics & format first
- 4–5 20-minute SOPs on one section, not a new paper every day;
- 2 mocks only for exam pace;
- Forms via F/R/S; if F ≥ half, no volume increase;
- Prefer 64 segmented entry; include at least one CD screen session weekly—IELTS is computer-delivered in mainstream markets now, so do not train only with paper notes.
B. 26–29 — the mud
- Most 6.5→7.0 learners live here: enough papers, weak labels;
- Mandatory five-code weekly report; champion code gets 2/3 of training;
- 3 timed: 2× 64-sets + 1× CD;
- 3 intensive: worst section only, “three shots” rule.
C. 30–31 — clean format, lock turns
- 30-second F scan every set; target F → 0;
- Intensive only on lucky-correct + new errors;
- ≥1 full CD paper weekly for continuous attention (A);
- Two weeks mean ≥30 → retarget 32–34 with the ≥32 row.
Two-week protocol
| Day | Action | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Timed set (64) | Score + codes |
| Tue | SOP ×1 | 2–3 deep notes |
| Wed | Champion-code 20 min | One skill only |
| Thu | Timed set | Score + codes |
| Fri | Intensive or half CD | Notes |
| Weekend | Timed or full CD + 15-min report | Keep or change band row |
Don’t: two full sets + two hours intensive same day; untagged bingeing; treating curated banks as a completion bar that “unlocks” band 7.
