IELTS Listening Error Taxonomy: Five Codes (Not “I Zoned Out”)

~8 min read · ~15 min weekly review · Updated 2026-07-24 · Operator-written

Finishing a set and writing “careless / distracted” next to every miss is not review. We use five letter codes—K · R · F · S · A—so you run one training focus next week instead of blindly adding more papers.

Same codes as the intensive SOP and form-completion traps.

The five codes (one primary per item)

CodeName30-second testDo not write
KSignal / structureAnswer after contrast, correction, or list shift; you stayed on the first half“Too slow”
RParaphraseSame slot, different wording; you waited for the stem word to echo“Unknown word” if you knew the idea
FFormatHeard correctly; word limit / spelling / number agreement failedBare “careless”
SSoundWeak forms, linking, 15/50, accent—acoustic failVague “didn’t understand”
AAttention / paceZoning out, copy-panic, multi-blank collapse; you can point when the line droppedDefault for every miss

Hard rule: one primary code per miss. Secondary notes OK; weekly counts use primary only—or everything becomes “A.”

Decision tree

  1. Would format alone have saved the mark? → F
  2. Transcript: wording swapped, audio clear, wrong slot? → R
  3. Correction / contrast / not-A-but-B and you kept the old info? → K
  4. Near-same words, muddy acoustics? → S
  5. Else, and you can name the drop-off moment? → A

When unsure: prefer F → R → K → S → A. A last, to block laziness.

F30-second format scan; five sessions without adding volumeTimed 64-sets + CD typing

15-minute weekly review

  1. Lay out 2–4 logs from the week;
  2. Count codes; crown the champion;
  3. Write one action line;
  4. Schedule 3 sessions: 2 on the champion, 1 timed full feel (CD simulator optional).
Anti-pattern: “I’ll fix K, R, and S a bit.” On limited bandwidth, multi-focus is no focus. Raw scores stuck at 26–32 usually mean mushy labels, not missing papers.

After two stable weeks of tags, tune volume with the 6.0→7.0 path.

Today: one Section on 64 sets → one letter per miss.
